Taiwan's Council of Agriculture announced on the day measures preventing the African Swine Fever (ASF) from spreading from China to Taiwan. They include requiring pig famers to boil waste food up to 90 degrees Celsius for one hour before feeding it to pigs, and increasing fines on travelers bringing meat products from China to Taiwan, from 15,000 Taiwan dollar to 300,000 Taiwan dollar (around 500 to 10,000 US dollar). ASF primarily originated in sub-Saharan Africa and has spread to European countries since 2007. China reported its first case of ASF in August 2018, and since the plague has reportedly spread to 14 Chinese provinces. Taiwan on 31 October 2018 reported having detected ASF virus in sausages bought in by a traveler from China. The ASF virus can survive for up to 1,000 days in frozen meat and 100 days in refrigerated meat. The ASF virus presents no risk to humans but it is fatal to pigs. EPA/DAVID CHANG VarkensNieuws
